Yesterday, I got to catalog a box set that included the Spanish translation of Cosmographiae introductio, which was apparently originally written in Latin in 1507 by a Martin Waldseemüller. It also included the facsimile of the original booklet plus an accompanying map, also created by Waldseemüller, called Universalis Cosmographia Secundum Ptholomaei Traditionem et Americi...(and so on, and so forth), as both a print facsimile and a computer scan of it on CD-ROM. The map is a world map and shows North and South America (labeled as "America") as a not much more than a strip of land with the label of "Terra incognita" (unknown land). As I worked on cataloging this set, the name Waldseemüller and the whole business about a map with one of the first depictions of America started to sound familiar. I had remembered from reading the news that about a year ago, the Library of Congress bought a map known as the Waldseemüller Map, for like, a gazillion dollars from the Germans. Apparently, the map shows for the first time our side of the world being officially called "America" and is the only known surviving copy from an original press run of about 1,000 copies.
I, as well as my fellow catalogers, usually consult (consult the Book of Armaments!--sorry) the Library of Congress online library catalog to help us make cataloging decisions, since, you know, they're supposed to be the standard in that ;-) Well, I looked up the Cosmographiae introductio and sure enough, I found the record for the originuhl 1507 booklet (apparently, more booklets survived than maps), as well as the record for that gazillion-dollar map. And what is the first thing that came to mind as I stared at the record? It was LOC gloating LOLCat-style "WE HAS IT". So then, I got this rush of inspiration to make LOL-style macros inspired by this map-thingy.
I emailed myself a bunch of articles and images of the map to work on later. The story of the map and booklet is pretty interesting...apparently, Waldseemüller, who mistakenly believed false accounts that Vespuci was the first one to "discover" America, wrote in the Cosmographiae introductio something to the extent of: "Since he was the one to discover this place, y'all don't mind if I name it after him?"
Anywayz, about the macros (who do my entries end up being longer than I planned them to??)...I spent most of yesterday evening working on them. I had only planned to do two macros (a "WE HAS IT" one and a "LET ME SHOW YOU IT" one) but I ended up doing several! I wanted to post them here, but I don't want to over-LOL you guys...so I will only post my three favorites. The thing is, I don't seem to be very good at writing LOLCat style, particularly with "alternate" spellings ("skeered" instead of "scared", etc.) so I don't know if they will come out quite as funny, so here they are:

This image comes from one of the top corners of the Waldseemüller Map, but I think it's been "artificially" colored. I didn't think of doing something like this originally but I think it came out pretty well. Maybe I should have written "Uhmerikuh" instead?

The LOC record that inspired all this in the first place...

This isn't the actual gazillion-dollar map, but is actually a smaller map that is part of the Cosmographiae introductio. It's just that I had a hard time finding a picture of the actual one on display...
So...what do y'all think? Questions, comments...*wince* snide remarks? ;-)
