So I finally finished reading "Love in the Time of Cholera." What can I say? It was a great story...definitely not what I was expecting, nevertheless it was a very well-written story. I really liked the author's deft movement back and forth in time in a way that didn't confuse the reader. Anyway, after I finished the story I decided to read what others had to say about the story, so yes, I went to Wikipedia. As expected, it wasn't a very in-depth analysis (I will probably get a book that analyzes the story from the library) but I was very pleasantly surprised to find out that it just so happens that a movie based on the book is coming out very soon...in two weeks in fact!
So I went to the movie's website (which is kind of cheesy, actually) and the Yahoo! Movies section to check out the trailer. Not quite sure what to make of it. For example, I wonder if they'll portray just how pathetic Florentino Ariza's "quest" for Fermina Daza seemed at times, but I'm pretty sure they'll omit the part where Florentino has an amorous affair with a 13-year-old girl when he is in his 70's (ewwwww). But anyway, the cast, for the most part, is made up largely of Latin American actors or actors with Latin American heritage (yay!). Here is a partial list and my opinion on the casting choices:
Florentino Ariza: Javier Bardem
Javier Bardem is perfect for portraying the haunted soul that is Florentino Ariza...but physically, I pictured him thinner and uglier because, let's face it, Florentino Ariza is not a handsome man by any means. Even the person who portrays him as a younger man seems too "pretty" and not thin enough for the part. Actually, I was picturing someone like singer Marc Antony (Jennifer Lopez's husband) to play the part of Florentino. But Marc Antony is a musician, not an actor ;-)

Benjamin Bratt: Dr. Juvenal Urbino
I had never considered Benjamin Bratt to play the part of Dr.Urbino but I find him to be a surprisingly good choice. I think he'll be able to pull off the haughtiness of Dr. Urbino.

Giovanna Mezzogiorno: Fermina Daza
I have really no comment about her, as I had never seen her before. Honestly, I had imagined Fermina Daza to be a bit more Hispanic-looking (Salma Hayek would have been a good choice, but perhaps she looked too...Mexican?) then again, a lot of Hispanic women, especially women of Fermina Daza's social standing, are often indistinguishable from women of European descent.

John Leguizamo: Lorenzo Daza
I somehow pictured Lorenzo Daza as heavier, older, and uglier looking and find John Leguizamo as too young to play the father of a teenage daugher.

Hector Elizondo: Don Leo
He's looks almost exactly as I pictured him, except that in my mind, he was a bit heavier...

Liev Schreiber: Lotario Thurgut
He's perfect for the part of Florentino's music teacher/work supervisor as Lotario Thurgut is described as a German immigrant and I'm thinking that Liev Schreiber is of German descent...maybe? (Am I right or wrong?)

Catalina Sandino Moreno: Hildebranda Sanchez
Looks to be perfect for the part of Fermina's cousin Hildebranda, who is saucy, sassy, and a bit of a flirt.

Fernanda Montenegro: Transito Ariza
First of all, what kind of a name is Transito?? (It could be like one of those characters that the author gives a sort of "nickname" that describes them perfectly) Anywayz, the actress seems to be frail and I always imagined Florentino's mother as a somewhat heavier woman with a strong character. But she may end up being able to portray Transito Ariza's strong will after all.

Anywayz, I can't wait to see the movie! I thought it quite a happy coincidence that the movie is coming out just as I finish reading the book. Then again, I now wonder if putting the book on Oprah's Book Club list was a coincidence after all.....

PS-[livejournal.com profile] intothebluagain, if you're looking for a book to read, I recommend this one, but I'll warn you, there might be a few, um, disturbing parts ;-)
