I just came across this very troubling and disturbing article:
New Kids On the Block...Staging a Comeback??

THIS. CANNOT. BE.

It's one thing for other groups to make a comeback, but the New Kids on the Block? They are SO dated! It was cute back in 1988-1990, but trying to revive that craziness just ain't gonna work in 2008! And their fan base has you know, GROWN UP and do not follow the group as ardently. In fact, they now laugh at the fact that they were once fans. If they even manage to get an audience, it will probably be made up mostly of people who are listening ironically. :-P

And the potential new fan base of teens who weren't even born when NKOTB was at it's height? They'll find them incredibly ridiculous!! They're not gonna listen to a band that their moms listened to, for goodness sake!
According to the article, the oldest member (who was my favorite O:-)) is now forty years old! ...and fans (old and new) are supposed to find them swoon-worthy??

Believe me, I LOVED NKOTB back in the day and got caught up in the craze...but please, let's leave all that in the past!

They might have a great new sound, though. Who knows? At the worst, they'd be a great source of amusement even if they suck.

Yeah, I'm also wondering if they'll do the whole "nostalgia" thing or try to come up with a new sound and image...They'll probably go the Spice Girls route and do a little bit of both (but mostly "nostalgia").

Well heck, they're digging everything else up from the 80's (Transformers, Ninja Turtles, Paula Abdul, and didn't Duran Duran even have a comeback of sorts too?), so why not?

I knowwww....NOTHING is being left to rest in the sacred tomb of the past. Soon there will be nothing left of the 80s to re-create!

I'm also thinking that when they try to recreate the 2000s in twenty-five or so years, there's nothing original, only stuff previously recycled from the 80s. And the cycle continues. :)

they will be semi popular for five minutes or maybe longer..... sell out a few tour dates if it is marketed right, and make a few million in the process. The come back of Duran Duran can't really be compared to a boy band scenario though..... Duran Duran wrote good music in the 80s, and even had an album or 2 released in the 90s, one of which had probably one of their best songs on it. Then they re-grouped and released a couple of albums more recently, have done more than one world tour since. They actually still have it, and are still doing it, although they maybe a little more obscure now then their 80s success. Not everyone will remember them for that era :P.

NKOTB will be a nostalgic thing for a few people... in my mind I see a bunch of 30 something women having a night out with the girls... drinking far too much and not remembering the concert, and if the 30 something men are clever, they will go to the concert, and get some poontang (although drunkin). A bit like the re-invention of INXS? Or then there is the Motley Crue thing, tommy and vince can't stand each other now, but share a stage in the process of making millions on the couple of tours they have done recently, cash in while their guitarist is still alive. I am sure NKOTB will make some money, and you can guarantee, money is how they will measure their success :P.

That's the thing about New Kids on the Block compared to Duran Duran. The music and image of Duran Duran seems almost have a timeless appeal and is appreciated even today unlike NKOTB, whose music and image, IMHO, is really dated and belongs only to that brief period of the late 80s-early 90s. It's stuff that people look back on and cringe.
So we'll see if they'll do the whole "nostalgia" thing or try to create a new "sound" and image...
...and ROFL about the "clever" 30-something men getting some poontang! ;-)
